Our Approach to Supporting Learners

Every child and young person requires support to help them learn and develop. Their individual needs must always be at the heart of how support is identified, planned, and provided. Support should be appropriate, proportionate, and timely.

At Bathgate Academy, we adopt a whole-school approach to learning, ensuring that all teachers are equipped to support pupils across all levels of ability. This is achieved through:

• Inclusive classroom support - subject teachers work alongside learning support specialists to ensure that learning materials and methods are suitable for all pupils.
• Minimising withdrawal from class - keeping pupils in their classes as much as possible ensures they remain engaged in key learning experiences while receiving on-the-spot assistance from support teachers and assistants.
• Collaborative problem-solving - learning support staff work closely with pupils to address challenges as they arise, ensuring minimal disruption to their education.

The Support for Learning department is fully committed to raising attainment levels for all pupils, ensuring they can achieve their full potential. We act as a key resource for staff, pupils, and parents, providing guidance and assistance where needed. It is the responsibility of the whole school to identify and address the needs of our pupils, ensuring they have access to a curriculum that is:

• Supportive of informed decision-making for their future

Identifying Additional Support Needs

Pupils requiring additional support are identified through multiple channels:

• During key transition periods
• Referral from class teachers
• Parental input
• Self-referral by the pupil
• Recommendations from external agencies

This information is shared with relevant staff through review meetings, consultation sessions, and the school database to ensure a coordinated approach to pupil support.
